As the month of May begins, communities across the world are coming together to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. This is an annual holiday dedicated to proper education, advocacy, and support for those facing mental health challenges. First established in 1949 by the Mental Health America, the month long campaign has grown into a nationwide movement. This movement has involved nonprofits, government agencies, local communities and those who have experienced mental health. The goal is very simple, reduce stigma around mental health and promote access to mental health resources.
Mental health continues to be a pressing issue within the United States and overall globe. According to research more than one in five U.S. adults experience a mental health illness each year. Which results in highlighting the importance of proper ongoing education and support.

Organizations say that Mental Health Awareness Month is not only about recognizing these challenges but also about encouraging people to see proper support and help one another. Campaigns emphasizes that mental health affects how individuals think, feel, and interact with the world around them. With this year, Mental Health America has introduced the theme “More Good Days, Together,” highlighting the importance of community, connection, and well being. The National Alliance of Mental Illness is also helping in efforts this month with is campaign of “Stigma grows in Silence. Healing begins in Community.” This encourages people to share their personal stories and helping other realize they are never alone.
Throughout the month of may events like hikes, walks, and online campaigns alongside other events have began to normalize the talk around mental health. As Mental Health Awareness Month continues to go on, it is in hope that this loud message stays beyond just the month of may. It is beneficial to remember to remind people that mental health is an essential part of human’s well being and that no one should have to face challenges alone.
