The Criminology Interest Association (CIA) are hosting guest speakers throughout the
spring semester. These speakers include members from Henrico County Sheriff’s Office, FBI,
APD, and Loudoun County CA’s office. There is a speaker once a month and it is open to
everyone; you don’t have to be a Criminology major or minor. These speakers give advice from
their own lives to educate students. There is also information provided that can be very useful in
helping you find a future career. Even if you want to come just to hear some of their stories, you
are more than welcome to!
The first speaker, members from Henrico County Sheriff’s Office, has already taken
place. Four officers joined us on February 17th to explain to us how the Henrico Police Academy
operates. Each member had different information on the academy such as how to join, what to
expect to do when you join, how long the academy occurs, and much more.
These speakers occur every semester, so if you miss a speaker, there is a good chance you
can hear from another member of the same organization at a later date. If you are in a
Criminology class, there is a chance that your professor will give you extra credit for attending
these events. Check with your professor first, but once you go to an event and sign in under your
Criminology class, you may be able to get extra credit.
The FBI speaker has already joined us this past month, but there are plenty more speakers
this semester. If interested in going to any of the other speakers, feel free to join! The APD will
come on Thursday, April 9th from 12-1pm in the Andrews Multipurpose room. Later in the
semester, the Hanover Safe Place Prevention Specialist and Court Advocate will speak on
Tuesday, April 21st from 12-1pm in Haley 112. Members from Loudoun County CA’s Office will
also be speaking on Tuesday, May 5th in the Andrews Multipurpose room. Dates and locations
may change, but information will be sent out on the Buzz for students to see.
Again, everyone is welcome to join no matter what your major may be!
