Every year on March 17, people worldwide celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, a holiday that has evolved from a religious feast day honoring Ireland’s patron saint into a global festival of Irish culture, music, and tradition. Despite not being a federal holiday in the U.S, the holiday grew as Irish immigrants, especially in the U.S., helped shape it into the lively celebration we know today. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York City in 1762, and over time, traditions like parades, wearing green, and enjoying Irish food and drink became central to the festivities.
In Ashland and Richmond, the celebration is just as lively, with Shamrock the Block standing out as one of the area’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day festivals. The popular street festival, now in its 19th year, took over Scott’s Addition on Saturday, offering live music, local vendors, food trucks, and plenty of Irish-themed fun. Many Randolph-Macon College students joined the festivities, making it a highlight of their weekend.
For junior Lindsay Gilman, it was a first-time experience that didn’t disappoint. “It was my first time, and I would definitely go again. It was pretty crowded but spaced out nicely,” she said, “My favorite part was either the live band, Mashup, because they were interactive with the crowd, or the mac and cheese food truck. I also liked all the vendors, and we looked at a lot of different jewelry, clothes, and artwork.”
Junior Kennedy Rowsey echoed the excitement, calling the festival a great way to spend the weekend. “It was super fun and gave me something to do this weekend! My favorite part was the shopping aspect, and the food was pretty good. It’s also nice that it’s free to get in, and the concert was great!” Rowsey said, “This was my first time going, and I will be going again next year.”
With live music, great food, and a welcoming atmosphere, Shamrock the Block continues to be a go-to event for those looking to celebrate Irish culture and enjoy a fun-filled weekend. As the festival marks another successful year, it’s clear that for many first-time attendees, it won’t be their last.
“It was such a great way to spend St. Patty’s weekend, and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be going back and bringing more friends with me,” Gilman said.
